the national civil rights movement has united many groups, mainly black, who are calling for investigations into examples of deaths in police custody, the victimisation of mainly black people by the police and also for the proper investigation of cases involving black victims.
steven lawrence was just one example where racist attitudes held by police got in the way of justice. another was ricky reel, a young asian man who was almost certainly murdered in kingston.
police at first refused to take his case seriously and investigate it properly, and much later still seemed to be dragging their feet over the case.
